Role overview

Reporting to the Senior Project Manager the Planner is responsible for developing master programmes, construction constraints and phasing plans during all stages of the project lifecycle, but will have a specific focus during the early stages between TG1 and TG4. The Planner will also assist the Senior Project Manager and Capital Director in the management and monitoring of progress in relation to the overall capital plan. Post contract, the Planner will support both the Project and Commercial Management disciplines to monitor construction progress and assist in the contract administration specifically around the acceptance of revised contract programmes.

Principal accountabilities & responsibilities
  • The efficient and timely implementation of project and programme planning
    • Develop and manage the master programming for all stages of the capital project portfolio, including concept design, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
    • Establish and maintain an effective project timeline managed in line with sponsor expectations, providing effective support and explanation on the effects of change to the project programme
    • Identify key project milestones and constraints.
    • Maximise production output through efficient planning.
  •  Assist the Project and Commercial Management disciplines to assess and manage the impact on time from the change control and contract administration on projects
  •  The delivery of solutions aligned with the business requirements document to the agreed time, cost and quality metrics approved at each stage of the Edinburgh Airport toll gate process - as well as timely management of the risk
  • Develop the strategy for project logistics and airport interfaces, utilise the existing processes within the Standard Operating Procedure.
    • Facilitate communications to and from the suppliers and stakeholders with the development of visual phasing diagrams.
  • Working with the Project Senior Leadership team manage the time element of the capital plan and contribute to the monthly reporting to the Capital Director and wider EAL Executive team.
  • The coordination and preparation of information to support the project sponsors through the Edinburgh Airport toll gate process
    • Management of appropriate programme information to allow recommendations and support decision making on next steps within the toll gate process
  • Support the Project Manager to ensure others meet their obligations/responsibilities under the appropriate H&S legislation as well as EAL Directives and Policy
    • Responsible for ensuring that adequate time is allowed during the key stages of design, mobilisation and construction.
    • Assist the Project Manager to identified risks because of logistics and airport interfaces and ensure that these have been adequately addressed.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Construction planning experience in an operationally live environment
  • Pre-construction planning experience including design and procurement.
  • Portfolio planning experience with a wide range of diverse projects impacting on a variety of stakeholder at different levels
  • Previous experience of effective contractor/ supplier management resulting in increased performance and reduced expenditure
  • Proven achievements in successful stakeholder and customer management
  • Strong inter-personal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Confident in decision making, issue resolution and ability to deliver
  • Self motivated and able to work with minimal supervision


  • Previous experience of working within an airport
  • Planning experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil engineering, building)
  • Qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. civil engineering, building.)

Framework and boundaries
  • Provide project planning across a portfolio of projects valued from £100k to £50m
  • Develop project timelines, activity schedules and work breakdown structures to ensure project deliverables achieved and critical path items are understood
  • Ensure that the programming preparation and monitoring elements of the project are carried out in line with the Standard Operating process.
  • Assist the Project and Commercial Managers to ensure that the supply chain is operating in line with both the Works and Professional services contracts with respect to time.
