Job Description:

A leading member of the finance team, this is a role requiring an individual with commitment, drive and ambition.  Reporting to the Senior Business Partner, this is a hands-on analytical finance role involved in identifying key financial trends, providing insight into commercial opportunities, supporting on capital business cases and helping to shape the future direction of the business through sound and insightful financial analysis.

The successful candidate will primarily support the senior members of the Commercial team and it is therefore essential the candidate can build relationships with and influence key stakeholders.

As a member of the business partnering team, the role will also include the development of financial plans and budgets and oversight of management accounts to assist with the financial performance of the business.

The role will involve:

  • Building strong relationships with key members of Commercial team and other key partners across the business
  • Monitoring performance vs budget and last year and working with Commercial team to ensure targets are met
  • Supporting Commercial team with capital investment appraisals, from inception to completion
  • Providing support during the budget and forecast process for the cost centre managers
  • Preparation of month end, including journal posting, preparation of management accounts and meaningful commentary of any key variances
  • Managing and reporting on channel towards ‘stretch’ budget, including highlighting opportunities, identifying blockers and supporting to remove them

Principal responsibilities

  1. Decision support
    • Providing insightful analysis, interpretation and explanation of trends and variances across the business
    • Providing financial support and guidance on key business decisions
    • Identifying and helping to drive opportunities for revenue growth and cost reduction
    • Supporting with capital investment appraisals; preparing or reviewing financial revenue models, supporting with key project deliverables, operational readiness etc
  2. Business Planning
    • Supporting Commercial department in building the annual budget, using analytical skills to identify key drivers of future revenue and costs
    • Leading quarterly re-forecasts taking account of material external and internal factors
    • Helping to drive the future strategic direction of the business through production of 5 year financial plans
  3. Management reporting
  • Ownership of the Commercial month end process including, but not restricted to, preparation and review of journals, preparation of management accounts together with variance analysis against budget and forecast
  • Improving monthly reporting to ensure it meets requirements of key leaders in the business
  • Identifying underlying causes for variances from budgets and forecasts and developing corrective actions to ensure financial targets can be achieved.
  • Monitoring the monthly financial performance of the business.
  • Preparing and discussing monthly rolling forecasts offering forward looking insights, context and meaning
  • Providing insightful comment on financial performance for the Executive team and the Board.
Person Specification:

It is essential that the individual comes from a firm/business background where they will have a strong awareness of best practice approaches to developing management information and business partnering.

The role is suited to a qualified accountant and, ideally, will have trained within a large accountancy practice or corporate environment. It is critical the Business Partner can work closely with all levels of non-finance stakeholders across the Commercial and Support Functions, displaying an assertive and highly collaborative approach.

Qualifications:
  • Professionally Qualified Accountant (e.g. CA, ACCA, ACMA) with a preference for a minimum of 3 year post-qualified experience in a commercial environment;
  • Degree qualified with a strong academic track
Experience:
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with business acumen;
  • Proven commercial experience influencing senior stakeholders and their decision making;
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels and across a range of finance expertise
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Office and a good working knowledge of accounting systems in a large organization;
Knowledge:
  • Detailed understanding of best practice approaches to developing management information and business partnering
  • Ability to analyse diverse financial and operational data and produce concise analysis and recommendations;
Personal Competence and skills:
  • Ability to take responsibility for decision making and possess sufficient gravitas to challenge current thinking and drive positive change;
  • Experienced in management reporting, planning and budgeting skills;
  • Excellent capability to interpret financial information to guide critical decision making and a well-developed commercial awareness;
