About the role

Our overall mission is simple: Happy customers, travelling safely, on-time. We are looking for a Senior Technician who will support the Fleet Manager with leading the safety, compliance and maintenance of Edinburgh Airport’s fleet operation.

The role will involve supporting the airports decarbonisation of our vehicle fleet, transforming the existing fleet to EV in conjunction with airport growth.

The Senior Vehicle Technician will play a pivotal role in maintaining and servicing a diverse fleet of vehicles at Edinburgh Airport. This role involves overseeing the day-to-day maintenance operations, ensuring all vehicles are safe, operational, and compliant with relevant regulations. The candidate will work closely with the Fleet Manager to plan, coordinate, and execute maintenance activities, while also providing technical leadership to a team of technicians.

You will support initiatives to foster a strong safety-based culture, engaging employees at all levels. This will include supporting the development, execution, and review of all risk assessments within fleet maintenance to ensure identification and mitigation of potential hazards.

About the Recruitment Process

What you'll be doing

As Senior Technician, you will lead on ensuring we deliver on time servicing schedules. You will also support in nurturing upcoming apprentice technicians to ensure they are competent, safe and understand the technical aspect of their role.  

  • Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.  Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of a variety of vehicles, including but not limited to airport shuttles, service vehicles, and heavy equipment. Ensure all maintenance work meets manufacturer and regulatory standards. Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance to minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Apprentice Leadership & Training:  Lead, mentor, and supervise our apprentice vehicle technician, providing guidance on complex repairs and technical issues. Deliver on-the-job training to junior technicians, ensuring the team is up to date with the latest vehicle technologies and repair techniques. Assist the Fleet Manager in managing workloads and scheduling to ensure efficient operation of the maintenance team.
  • Compliance & Safety. Ensure all vehicles meet airport and governmental safety and environmental standards. Maintain detailed records of all maintenance and repairs, ensuring compliance with legal and operational requirements. Promote and enforce a culture of safety within the maintenance team, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Inventory & Resource Management. Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and equipment, ensuring availability for ongoing maintenance activities. Liaise with suppliers to order parts and equipment as needed, while maintaining cost-effectiveness. Assist in budget planning and cost control measures related to vehicle maintenance.
  • Technical Expertise & Problem Solving. Utilise advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to identify and resolve complex vehicle issues. Stay updated on the latest vehicle technologies and repair methodologies, incorporating them into daily operations. Provide technical support and advice to the Fleet Manager and other stakeholders as required.
  • Customer Service. Collaborate with airport operations and other departments to ensure vehicle availability and reliability for daily operations. Address and resolve any issues raised by vehicle operators or other airport personnel regarding vehicle performance.
  • Safety: Ensure all vehicles comply with safety regulations and standards, conducting regular safety inspections and audits to ensure the highest levels of safety. Ensure vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with local regulations by performing audits, providing feedback and trends to leadership.

What we're looking for

We’re looking for someone with technical experience in working within a vehicle fleet setting. You’ll understand servicing and providing technical support in a vehicle fleet setting.

Strengths:

  • Technical Certification: NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a vehicle technician, with at least 2 years in a senior or supervisory role.
  • Licenses: Valid UK driving license.
  • Extensive knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repair techniques, and maintenance best practices.
  • Team working you can work constructively in and between different teams, and challenge behaviours where necessary to change behaviours.
  • Problem solving – you take a logic driven approach and will be able to quickly develop a deep understanding of Edinburgh systems and operational data.
  • Proficient in the use of diagnostic software and tools.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.

 

The following additional items are nice to have but are not essential for the role:

  • HGV License
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and lean methodologies
