About the role

About the role

We are looking for Aviation Security Officers to join the team at Edinburgh Airport on a 37-hour per week permanent contract. You could be rostered up to 43 hours per week and offered overtime. Your basic starting salary will be £23,409, increasing to £25,944 upon completion of training. Once you finish training, you will also receive a shift allowance of approximately £7,600 per year for a fully flexible contract.

Right now we are looking for Females only, to maintain our equal split as required by Civil Aviation Authority, but we will be opening up to everyone in early 2025.

Our Security team is dedicated and highly trained and we support thousands of people coming through the airport every day. The team is responsible for keeping all of our passengers and staff safe in the terminal and for their onward journeys.

Taking on one of the most vital roles in the airport, you will make sure that all passengers have a safe and enjoyable experience. You might be the first or only person our passengers meet on their journey through the airport, and we want to provide excellent customer service at every stage.

Before you apply, make sure you’ve visited our FAQs page for application tips and our Security page to meet some of the team.

About the Recruitment Process

The Security recruitment process involves 2 stages; firstly you will complete a telephone interview to discuss your experience and understanding of the role, and if successful at the telephone interview, you will be invited to an assessment centre. Our assessment centres consist of 3 elements; a group task, a computer based test, and an interview.

Please note all roles within Security begin with a 5 week full time training course. If your application is successful, you will be made a conditional offer subject to pre-employment checks and passing the training course. We have courses running from January to August, so if you’re looking for a role but can’t start straight away, we encourage you to still apply and we’ll book you on to a later course.

What you'll be doing
  • Screening all people and vehicles passing through restricted areas using archway detectors and manual body searching when necessary.
  • Operating x-ray equipment to screen luggage and other items.
  • Manually searching luggage for prohibited items.
  • Checking identification or travel documents for all passengers, staff and airport users.
  • Patrolling the terminal and outside areas to ensure that the airport is secure.

We’re looking for people from all backgrounds/experiences – so if you have excellent customer service skills, good communication and are a great team player then we want to hear from you! As we provide full training for all Security roles, no previous experience working in a Security environment is required, but experience in working in a front-line customer service type role is desirable.

  • Be able to learn and follow set procedures.
  • Be over 18 years of age.
  • Be able to be cleared in accordance with CAA regulations (includes providing a satisfactory five-year reference history and EAL being able to undertake a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Counter Terrorist Check on your behalf).
  • Please be aware that this role involves a lot of physical work, manual handling as well as being on your feet for long periods of time.

About working shifts

This is a fully flexible 37-hour contract working shifts and when the operation requires, you could be rostered up to 43 hours per week and offered overtime. The shift start and end times will vary with early starts, late evening finishes and potentially some night shifts. The shifts could start as early as 3.30am or backshifts could finish at 2.00am.

Please be aware that as we are a 24/7 operation, you will be rostered to work weekends and on bank/public holidays. The length of your shifts will also vary between 4 to 10 hours per shift.

You will be given a core roster, but it is likely that changes will be required due to operational needs– we would give around 1 weeks’ notice of any shift changes.

In terms of working patterns, it is likely that you would have 1 weekend in 4 off to ensure a fair work/life balance.
